Use TinyMCE Advanced Plugin To Extend WordPress WYSIWYG Editor
Since the very first day I started blogging on Today.com, I got to know that it is using WordPress as the blogging engine. I have been blogging on self-hosted WordPress for about 6 months now (no, I never tried the hosted WordPress before).
I noticed some differences between the WYSIWYG (that is What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get for some of you who are not familiar with the geeky abbreviation) editor on Today and other regular self-hosted WordPress WYSIWYG editors.
Noticed the black arrow? There are many new buttons highlighted in the above image as well as other buttons like font size, font family not highlighted in the row above the highlighted one. Apparently those are extended features added through the use of TinyMCE Advanced plugin.
TinyMCE Advanced is actually a plugin that consists of 16 other plugins, namely, Advanced hr, Advanced Image, Advanced Link, Context Menu, Emotions (Smilies), Full Screen, IESpell, Layer, Media, Nonbreaking, Print, Search and Replace, Style, Table, Visual Characters and XHTML Extras. Together these plugins can add over 40 new buttons to the toolbar, which is now two rows plus one hidden row.
I do not yet know how all the 40 buttons work, neither do I have the full list of all the features of the plugin (the full features are not even listed on the TinyMCE Advanced homepage). I will probably try to list all the features of this wonderful plugin as well as how the buttons work in another post. Meanwhile, I am currently only interested to install the TinyMCE Advanced plugin to extend the WYSIWYG editors of my other blogs due to the following interesting features:
- Support for making and editing tables.
- Font size and font family selection.
As you can guess, I wasted no time implementing the plugin on my other blogs and the process was simple and smooth as silk. You should really use this plugin too, if you think that the WordPress WYSIWYG editor is not powerful enough and has been limiting the way you would like to format your pages and posts. Just remember to go to the settings page of TinyMCE Advanced to set up the buttons which you would like to use regularly.
Have you been using this plugin? What are the features you like the most about this plugin? Anyone has any idea what MCE stands for?
